The characters in PIOUS by KENN BIVENS are complex and psychologically thrilling to meet in literature. I made life discoveries in this novel. Some words or wise proverbs written about the internet became real and meaningful. Carpious is the main character. Carpious is the most complex character. When I began the novel, I thought of him as so special. He is a man any person would feel happy to have as their neighbor. He is open, intelligent and always willing to help his neighbor. Little did I know that Carpious had personal and strong inner demons. I began this novel figuratively half asleep. As I read page after page I became more awake. By the last page my whole body was tingling with the fact that life can look one way on the outside and be totally different on the inside. Each of us has said I know that lady or man. Now after reading PIOUS by KENN BIVENS I realize the use of that statement is made too often and too loosely. In the process of learning about one another and befriending one another or loving one another assumptions are made. Ian is the new neighbor who moves in the community. Because of his past people shun him, hate him and definitely don't trust him.. He is the known piranha whom all families must avoid for their safety.

Nothing is as it seems in PIOUS by KENN BIVENS. I appreciated the explanations given for Carpious' character at the end of the novel. I could never have understood his mind without the help of the author. This is a novel that serves up ugly characters, hard living characters. It is a novel that also serves a wonderful portion of dessert. The dessert is that the human mind is unique in everyone of us. Also, each of us is trying to live "a" life. While this living of lives is going on there is a whole lot of paint splattered haphazardly on walls, floors, doors. When the paint gets on me, all I can do is wash it off and hope that next time I will be more careful. For that reason, I will call PIOUS by KENN BIVENS a cautionary tale which almost took me further than I chose to go. Magnificent.random.kennbivins

This was an interesting story with strong believable characters. I greatly enjoyed it and this story will stay with me for a while.
A lot of the characters in Pious are in a struggle with who they believe they are, who they believe their friends and neighbors are, and who they really at their core. I experienced so many emotions reading this novel. I was angry with some characters, frustrated with others, I even found myself literally yelping at certain revelations. The main character drew me in so much because he spends a lot of time denying who he is, which in my opinion hinders his own forgiveness of himself and potentially his own redemption.

If you enjoy books where the environment even becomes a character, the lush descriptions and scenery in the story will capture you as well. Kenn Bivins descriptions of even some of the most mundane of elements recreate the world of Mechi Lane so neatly and perfectly woven into the themes of the book, you can't put it down!

Pious was a rich story that I devoured in just days. I'd definitely recommend the book Pious to other readers who are looking for an engaging story that is beautifully written and has rich characters.
Just the name of the novel Pious was intriguing to me. The cover was a bit eerie to me, I decided to purchase on my new . Kenn Bivins (the author) took redemption to another level with his debut novel Pious. Carpious the character is dealing with a demon, yet a very loving human being. I truly was rooting for him throughout the entire novel. This novel is spiritually inclined well written and easy to read.
The surrounding cast is relatable and real. When Ian Kaplan arrives on Mechi Lane Carpious is force to deal with his demon. Just like you can't judge a book by its cover, humans are the same the way, just because their doing what is acceptable in society doesn't mean its all good. Pious is going to make you think about this world in which you live. Kudos Kenn on your debut I am a fan!
Carpious Mightson is single, has been married, has no children, and is living what appears to be a simple, unblemished life. He is a Godly man with values, morals and respect for himself, his neighbors and others. This page turning novel by Kenn Bivins takes the reader through the days that lead Carpious, the main character back to his past. When confronted by what he has forgotten, yet not forgiven he finds himself questioning who he is versus who he portrays himself to be. Carpious seems to have it all together, he's a model neighbor, a deacon in the church, and on the verge of starting a relationship after the turmoils of his divorce seemed to have been resolved. His life changes when Sydney Durden let's him know she is just as interested in him as he is in her, Ian Kaplan moves into the neighborhood, and his ex-wife Alethea returns. It is then that the reader finds, Carpious is living a lie.

Pious is a story about forgiving and moving on. It is easy to say forgive and forget, but realistically we don't often forget what tears us to the core. Carpious built his new life from a torn core. He attached himself to a new neighborhood, new surroundings, a church family and a new life. Forgetting where he came from, what the life he led had been like would have been easier if he just forgave himself and others before he moved on. Karma often brings things of the past back to light. In an effort to keep his past in the past, he takes matters in his hands as the man he was not the man he became. This novel of twists and turns is a page turner, a quick and intriguing reading. I had trouble with the authors narration. At times I thought it was disconnected as though it was not a novel but a play, or movie being directed. This form of writing did not take away from the storyline. I would definitely read another novel by Kenn Bivins.
